Welding undercut refers to a groove or depression formed at the toe of a weld where the weld metal meets the base metal. It is characterized by a recessed area along the edge of the weld bead. Undercutting can occur for various reasons during the welding process and is generally considered a welding defect.

Causes of welding undercut may include:

  1. Incorrect welding parameters: Inappropriate welding current, voltage, or travel speed can lead to improper fusion between the weld metal and base metal, resulting in undercut.

  2. Incorrect electrode angle: Holding the welding electrode at an improper angle can cause excessive heat to concentrate at the base metal, leading to undercutting.

  3. Excessive weaving: Excessive weaving or oscillation of the welding electrode can result in uneven distribution of heat and inadequate fusion at the edges, causing undercut.

  4. Improper joint preparation: Insufficient cleaning or improper bevel angle of the joint can create gaps or irregularities at the weld edges, facilitating undercut formation.

  5. Insufficient filler metal deposition: Inadequate filler metal deposition or improper welding technique can result in incomplete filling of the weld joint, leading to undercut.

  6. Welding technique: Improper welding technique, such as excessive heat input or incorrect manipulation of the welding arc, can contribute to undercutting.

  7. Material properties: Certain material properties, such as high carbon content or susceptibility to rapid cooling, can increase the likelihood of undercut formation.

Undercutting can weaken the weld joint and compromise its integrity, leading to structural failures or defects. Therefore, it is essential to identify and address the root causes of undercutting through proper welding techniques, parameter adjustments, and joint preparation to ensure high-quality welds. Inspection and corrective measures, such as grinding or rewelding, may be necessary to repair welds affected by undercut.
